The US biofuel industry supports over 30,000 union jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and utilities, construction, and professional and business services.
Support of ethanol and biofuels has a positive effect on union jobs and is a pathway to increase union membership. In 2019, the union density rate in the ethanol and biofuel industry was seven percent in comparison to six percent in the national private sector.
Unionized workers play a major role in the transportation of ethanol and biodiesel. Rail union members are responsible for the shipment of about 70% of all ethanol in the US.
