From the farm to the fuel pump, the ethanol industry is a vital component of Minnesota’s economy.
Minnesota’s ethanol industry supports more than 20,000 full-time jobs in the state and generates more than $1.7 billion in income for Minnesota households.
Many of Minnesota’s ethanol plants also continue to be locally owned, often by farmers in the area, and provide a number of jobs in rural Minnesota where they are much needed. As Minnesota grows its use of renewable fuels to meet environmental goals, it is improving the economic vitality of outstate communities.
Going Global
The United States is the #1 ethanol producer in the world, generating nearly 60% of global output in 2017.
The U.S. exported 1.4 billion gallons of ethanol, valued at $2.4 billion, in 2019, about 8% of total U.S. production. The top ethanol export markets are Canada, Brazil and India.
